Modify nested numbered list

Currently if you have a numbered list and nest a subnumber the format is like so:

1. Dog

   1. German Shepard

      1.

   2. Belgian Shepard

      1. Malinois

2.

3.

Can we change to a 1.1.1 nested list schema?

ex.

1. Dog

   1.1 German Shepard

   1.2 Belgian Shepard

   1.2.1 Malinois

   1.2.2Tervuren

2. Cat

   2.1. Siberian

   2.2. Siamese
